To glow up or not to glow up, that is the question!

It’s such a huge trend these days! People are making reels and reels about their hair glow ups or office glow ups or fitness glow ups. We get it, the people are ‘glowing up’. Whatever that means!

Are people actually becoming a ‘better’ version of themselves? Can sorting your hair or make-up storage or nighttime routine really clear those negative thoughts and self doubt?

We have some news for you… apparently not. There’s a phenomenon called the self improvement burn out. This means that the constant and never ending self improvement can lead to burn out. We can become more depressed, negative and unhappy with ourselves! Happiness comes with perception apparently! How we perceive ourselves is actually going to have a bigger impact on how we feel about ourselves, not those physical chances we keep trying to make.

But how do we change that? It’s so ingrained into us by society to judge, analyse & criticise. Making it very hard to stop! Things like ‘who wore it best’ in the naughties stick with us and the concept that we can just drag celebrities down for the way they look is just a ‘natural’ part of life now.

So first, be kind to ourselves, others and take those negative thoughts and flip them, try to challenge them.

Second, might seem a little contradictory but if those negative thoughts come up don’t beat yourself up about having them, it’s so ingrained in us, they aren’t going to disappear just because you will them to. Take a second and say ‘what is really behind that thought?'

  • are you feeling vulnerable
  • how’s your mental health today
  • what have you done today to make yourself feel good?

Our actions, mental health & how vulnerable we feel to others' gaze has such an impact on how we feel about ourselves.

Thirdly, do something that makes you feel good, move your body even if it’s for a short walk, drink some water, eat something & PUT THAT 8th CUP OF COFFEE DOWN!!!

We feel like we glow or do better if we are taking care of ourselves & I’m not saying run and lose weight but moving rather than rotting is important for your self image.

Finally, focus on just how bloody amazing you are as a human. Physically, mentally, intellectually. No matter who you are, you are amazing, unique & have the power to do and be anything you want to be. Feeling a little rough about how you look is normal and fine but don’t let it stop you from conquering the world today!!
