Let's Talk... Relationships

Deciding to do life together is often not as fun as the fairy tails make out, it’s hard work. There are disagreements, petty arguments, prolonged silences and a lot of alcohol fueled rage.

As a society we glamorise the good and sweep under the carpet the boring and yell about the bad. So when the butterflies drift off into the sky and the arguments have become less passionate, why is it that we don’t discuss the boring parts of our relationships? This often leads us to ending the relationship as we assume that our love is dead.

Love is existing and knowing that person is existing next to you, it’s being able to compromise on the TV programme you both watch and make the chores you have to do more fun and engaging. It isn’t always holidays or big romantic gestures. We are told that if those don’t happen we aren’t in love.

And sex! Why on Earth do we think that kinky is better? If you have a kink, great, but if you like a 3 minute missionary in the bed with the lights off that’s also fine! We have learnt to focus our relationships on sex and that’s what makes it intimate but actually the most intimate thing is asking someone to buy your tampons and not lying that you’re a light flow but telling them the whole hog.

Love isn’t rings, holidays and flowers. It’s mending your tyre, making you a cuppa without being asked and remembering where you left your keys when you’re running late for work.

Comparison is the theft of joy, don’t let it steal your man too!
